I was raised on a mixed farm in Northwest New Brunswick, which accounts in part for my abiding interest in food systems. After retiring from teaching sociology, with a focus on social change and the development of sustainable agriculture, at St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan, I returned to our farm in California Settlement. Once again, I am involved with growing food, this time on a more modest scale and with a heightened sensitivity to soil health and local needs. Working with others in Green Light/Feu Vert, has allowed me to better understand and assess how people’s actions and choices are affecting the natural environment. It has also helped me see what we can do locally, in a globalizing world, to lessen human impacts on climate change as part of community efforts to improve eco-stewardship in the upper St. John River Valley region.
